TOP 5 PICKS OF THE YEAR

So it's one more year down and let's face it it's not been Hollywood's most exciting one. There have been a few gems that stood out so here are my top five picks...

1. DISTRICT 9
2. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
3. HANGOVER
4. STAR TREK
5. AVATAR

And now as I take a break- critics' also need to go off duty - let me just give you a taster of what 2010 looks like. Yes its a yummy year with some very exciting releases and here are the five films I am super excited about-

1. INCEPTION directed by Christopher Nolan. A sci-fi thriller with Leonardo Di Caprio, Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page

2. SHUTTER ISLAND directed by Martin Scorsese.Starring Leonardo Di Caprio, Sir Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo and Emily Mortimer.

3. IRON MAN 2 directed by Jon Favreau with Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and
Hollywood's much adored wrestler Mickey Rourke.

4. ALICE IN WONDERLAND directed by TIM BURTON with his two favorites- Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. There's also Mia Wasikowska, Micheal Sheen and Anna Hathaway in the mix.

5. THE LAST AIRBENDER directed by M.NIGHT SHYAMALAN with Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis and Jackson Rathbone.

So I'm off for a much needed break. Bon Voyage people. See you in the new year!!!

Cheers,

Neha

Oh My God...How did this slip under my radar?

I feel like a kid right now and as I pen my thoughts-I'm literally jumping with excitement...Let me not get ahead of myself here...back track a bit and tell you how it happened.

So here I am, sitting and day dreaming about how some of the movies this year are good but nothing like The Dark Knight that threw me for a six...So I get thinking about what Christopher Nolan is up to these days and what's the deal with the next Batman movie. Sadly there hasn't been an official announcement (expecting one January of next year) but that's also because our man Nolan has been busy and extremely tight lipped about his current project-a contemporary sci-fi thriller Inception.

And this is just about the time I had that "Oh my God" moment.

My favorite current director-Christopher Nolan (obviously) and my favorite Hollywood actor-Leonardo Di Caprio are collaborating along with Marion Cotillard (La Vie en rose) and Ellen Page (of Juno fame) for this really secretive project that's expected to release July 2010."It's set within the architecture of the mind." And while there's not much credible information to go on (Nolan refuses to talk) it seems to indicate that Leo plays a CEO whose also the mastermind of a technology that operates vie an injection that allows him and his crew to enter people's dreams-retrieve them and/or change them.

The tag line says "Your mind is the scene of the crime"- and knowing Nolan it should be one hell of a crime scene.

im late im late im late!

one of my favourite books of all time is being brought to the screen once again in an extended, new, never seen before way!

JOHNNY DEPP, HELENA BOTHAM CARTER, and a lovely, ethereal looking, young actress named MIA WASIKOWSKA (who plays the title character and bears a vague, uncanny resemblance to claire danes!) star in TIM BURTON'S version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND releasing in March of 2010 in 3d and 2d and using a blend of live action and motion capture!

the trailer, as we would expect from BURTON looks wicked :) (she smiles like the cheshire cat...heee heee) -large heads, dark overtones, green glowing eyes, painted faces and a wonderfully rich production design fil this wonderland where ALICE has retuned and the RED QUEEN (HELENA BOTHAM CARTER) has overtaken and now rules.. All our favourite characters from the book return - the white rabbit who's constantly running late (hence my title above!); the queen of hearts or the red queen, the MAAAD HATTER- DEPP of course, tweedle dee and tweedle dum and my favourite- the wonderfully evil, mysterious, clever and delightful CHESHIRE CAT!

watch the trailer to get a feel of BURTONS interpretation and vision of ALICE's WONDERLAND but you will just hold your breath, as i am, and i can tell you im super excited.. because it looks like its going to be an imaginative, edgey and colourful film with a great cast and characters and BURTONS trademark quirky, fantastical, dark, dreamy, surreal and engagin stamp !

what a RIDE!

AVATAR REVIEW
Its been 12 years and Mr Cameron, all I can say is that Mr Cameron, I think you can take a little bow. While the man didn’t spend this much time coming up with the story here, he sure as hell mustve spent painstaking hours on HOW to tell it and that’s what this ones really about.
When JAMESSULLY tells his video log towards the end of act 1 that EARTH feels like a dream and PANDORA, the reality, you almost agree because CAMERON, one of the few commercial filmmakers who knows his storytelling, gives you a glimpse of life on another planet like you have never seen before!
I loved how his PANDORA’s box, oops moon, (a super expensively conceived, state of the art technology infused but ironically primitive, version of earth as we know it), opens up unassumingly, seamlessly and powerfully, hitting you in the face with a richness, amazing attention to detail, neon drenched trippiness that is frankly, simply beautiful and just too hard to ignore.
This is a one of a kind movie going experience so no matter how long the first half is, no matter how predictable and trite the second gets, how almost too archaic and innocent a group of oversized, but hauntingly graceful blue skinned ‘navis’ look chanting around a sacred tree, and how ironic it is that the most expensive film made to date is in essence giving us a message of oneness, simplicity, and harmony, there is mastery in what Cameron has achieved technically in filmmaking, there is commercial smarts in how universal, elmenental and relatable he keeps it all, and there is a strong cast of whom WORTHINGTON & SALDANA rock, soar, and shine.
Cameron’s secret is that he gives us a futuristic fantasy that is a full blown popcorn entertainer which has modernity written all over it and myth, meaning and soul hidden in it. An age old tale in an absolutely mesmerizing new avatar which makes you feel you are on PANDORA, AVATAR is James Cameron setting a new bar for all fantasy, sci fi, animated, motion capture films to come and a ride not to be missed- CATCH IT.
