AVATAR REVIEW
Its been 12 years and Mr Cameron, all I can say is that Mr Cameron, I think you can take a little bow. While the man didn’t spend this much time coming up with the story here, he sure as hell mustve spent painstaking hours on HOW to tell it and that’s what this ones really about.
When JAMESSULLY tells his video log towards the end of act 1 that EARTH feels like a dream and PANDORA, the reality, you almost agree because CAMERON, one of the few commercial filmmakers who knows his storytelling, gives you a glimpse of life on another planet like you have never seen before!
I loved how his PANDORA’s box, oops moon, (a super expensively conceived, state of the art technology infused but ironically primitive, version of earth as we know it), opens up unassumingly, seamlessly and powerfully, hitting you in the face with a richness, amazing attention to detail, neon drenched trippiness that is frankly, simply beautiful and just too hard to ignore.
This is a one of a kind movie going experience so no matter how long the first half is, no matter how predictable and trite the second gets, how almost too archaic and innocent a group of oversized, but hauntingly graceful blue skinned ‘navis’ look chanting around a sacred tree, and how ironic it is that the most expensive film made to date is in essence giving us a message of oneness, simplicity, and harmony, there is mastery in what Cameron has achieved technically in filmmaking, there is commercial smarts in how universal, elmenental and relatable he keeps it all, and there is a strong cast of whom WORTHINGTON & SALDANA rock, soar, and shine.
Cameron’s secret is that he gives us a futuristic fantasy that is a full blown popcorn entertainer which has modernity written all over it and myth, meaning and soul hidden in it. An age old tale in an absolutely mesmerizing new avatar which makes you feel you are on PANDORA, AVATAR is James Cameron setting a new bar for all fantasy, sci fi, animated, motion capture films to come and a ride not to be missed- CATCH IT.
