THE INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS- MOVIE REVIEW
If you've ever wondered what Tarantino the brains behind Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill Vol 1&2 would do with the typically serious period war film genre then no more wondering- INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is your answer-Tarantino electrifies the genre typical Tarantino style with his time tested love for bloody violence, black humor, bad boy bashing and cartoony, loony devilry.
Only this time he pushes the envelop further- rewrites World War 2 history, makes the historic Hitler a minor player in the Nazi verses. Jews battlefield, gets the Americans- the CIA more involved-the INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS are a covert group led by Brad Pitt and consist of Germans, fallen from fame and rebellious Jews determined to give the Nazi's occupying France a taste of their own medicine. Tarantino gives us a small little masterpiece in the form of the original, unexpected and memorable new bad boy of cinema- Col. Hans Landa played skillfully by a little known Austrian TV actor- Christoph Waltz- whose a satanic Jew Hunter for the SS but has the most riveting, silky smooth, salesman friendly veneer. He's not one of the INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS of the story- but he's the GLORIOUS BASTARD you want to see all the time and miss terrible when absent.
Tarantino shows a lot of gumption-long drawn out, leisurely paced, suspense filled scenes ( the opening scene deserves the best opening scene award of the year for the deliberation and powerful dramatic arc of an interrogation between Landa and a farmer.) that surprise you with their comic turn or cold bloody character. Another surprise- while you would expect Brad Pitt to be the backbone of this script that's not to be-infact if it's not Christoph Waltz it's Tarantino's masterfully layered script that's an ensemble of multiple characters, multiple story lines and multiple chapters that in isolation and cohesively, in the most arresting fashion, converge into one big, bold, dramatic, stylized climactic showdown.
Finally the showstopper, big ticket experience we've been waiting for. CATCH IT.
